What is Tortoise Hollow? Tortoise Hollow is the name I have given to a roughly seven and a half acre parcel of land in Central Florida where my husband and I are making our new home. The land is mostly wetland and the wetlands will be dedicated as a conservation easement forever. We are building a house and this site is dedicated to documenting the long complicated process of building a house immersed in nature. Here you will see what it takes to get approval from the Florida Department of Environmental Protection, the Army Corps of Engineers, and the St. John’s River Water Management District to build a single family home and associated access road.
We are also very much into animal rescue and have exciting plans to include a large tortoise enclosure on the land so that we can rescue a few gentle giants such as leopard tortoises or sulcatas when the house is completed. We have started our tortoise collection already with a tiny Hermann’s tortoise named Virgil who will have his own natural outdoor enclosure at the “Hollow.” Check back often to see our progress.
